Marble ointment jar, Old Kingdom

A fine ointment vessel made of marble. The vessel has a nice shape and a flat foot. The marble has special veins, consisting of various inclusions of non-calcite minerals. The ointment pot is completely intact, the shape of the vessel folows natural lines of the stone. Such pots were put into the tomb with the deceased, because it was regarded as an indestructible object, therefore very well suited for eternity. In the Old Kingdom, it was still customary to put “real” items of utensils in the graves. Later, it was usually only miniatures of such vessels.
